What Is Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella About?

Inspired by Sergei Prokofiev’s original 1945 score, Cinderella is a dark, cinematic reimagining of the traditional fairytale, set in London during the Blitz of World War II. A true wartime romance, as an opportunistic meeting one enchanting night lands Cinderella and a handsome young RAF pilot together, just long enough to fall madly for each other, before being torn apart by the terror of the German bombing raids. Intertwined into this production are cinematic elements which help to bring this love story to life.

The History of Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella

Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella is one of the New Adventures team’s most loved and popular productions, having first premiered at the Piccadilly Theatre in London in 1997, before transferring to the Ahmanson Theatre in LA, as well as countless shows as part of European tours since then.

A revised version of Cinderella made its debut in 2010, which included the introduction of new choreography and design elements. The run at Sadler’s Wells this Christmas forms part of a 30th anniversary tour which kicks off in Plymouth in November.

The only work I missed from Matthew Bourne's entire works. It is clever, smart modern adaption of famous 'Cinderella' with a twist. Having had recorded from BBC during the past Xmas but saved to watch later and I'd like to watch the live show first. Read more
