What Is Swan Lake About?
Swan Lake is a ballet which has ignited a love of dance for generations. Set to a mesmerising score by Tchaikovsky, the ballet shares the story of Siegfried, a young prince who falls in love with Princess Odette. However, Odette and her companions are cursed to transform into swans, only returning to their human forms at night. Will love triumph and lift the spell set by the evil sorcerer, Baron von Rothbart, or will a tragic destiny seal their fate?
The History of Swan Lake
First performed in Moscow in 1877, Swan Lake has always had a special role within the repertoire of The Royal Ballet, where it was first performed in 1934. The unforgettable tale of romance, betrayal and magic has been performed in a succession of productions, including Liam Scarlett’s additional choreography, which was seen for the first time in 2018. This production of Swan Lake remains true to the original Petipa-Ivanov whilst also bringing fresh eyes to the story for a modern audience. It was last staged at the Royal Opera House in 2024.
Swan Lake Creative Team
Swan Lake features original choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, with additional choreography by Liam Scarlett and Frederick Ashton. The design is by John Macfarlane (Peter Grimes), and the lighting design is by David Finn (Peter Wright’s Nutcracker).
