What Is the Ballet Landmarks: Unmissable Ashton About?
Landmarks presents three milestone works by Frederick Ashton, one of the most influential choreographers in Britain, who nurtured, revolutionised and defined ballet in the UK. Created over three decades, each piece explores a different facet of the imagination of this inimitable craftsman. The programme features Les Rendezvous, Symphonic Variations, and Daphnis and Chloë.
Les Rendezvous
Created in 1933, Les Rendezvous was Ashton’s first major ballet choreographed for the Vic-Wells company (as the Royal Ballet was named at the time) and features a series of delightful dances performed by a group of friends upon meeting in the park. The ballet features music by Daniel-François-Esprit Auber, arranged by Constant Lambert.
Symphonic Variations
Created in 1946, this post-war ballet is considered one of Ashton’s tour de forces. A celebration of ‘pure dance’, Symphonic Variations is a ballet without narrative, performed by six dancers in a series of solos, duets, quartets and sextets that celebrate the relationship between music and movement, set to a score by César Franck.
Daphnis and Chloë
This 1951 ballet is inspired by, and features, Maurice Ravel’s orchestral work of the same name, based on the Greek myth. The pastoral romance recounts the relationship between a goatherd and shepherdess as it is encouraged and interfered with by the Gods, and features Greek Folk dance influences alongside classical ballet.
