About Matthew Bourne’s Romeo and Juliet

The story of Romeo and Juliet is a tale as old as time: two lovestruck teens strive to be together despite the interference of their warring families. Held back by a society that would rather remain divided, they must risk everything amidst the dizzying obsession of young love.

Olivier Award-winning choreographer Matthew Bourne and his company New Adventures present a breathless display of romance and dance, making the age-old story of forbidden romance feel scintillating, urgent and modern.

Set in the oppressive walls of the Verona Institute - a youth asylum or young offenders institute - it has received 5 star reviews from critics, and its “bleak yet passionate” (The Guardian) storytelling that is “electrified by youthful energy” (The Stage). Bourne’s production is an incredible feat of dance and live theatre that will make you forget about the famous adaptations that came before: this is Shakespeare perfectly adapted for a new generation.
