What a wonderful start to 2023. This is my first to a Matthew Bourne production, although I did see the televised version of The Nutcracker at Christmas. This is my first to a Matthew Bourne production, although I did see the televised version of The Nutcracker at Christmas. And to say I was mesmerised right from the start would be a real understatement. This production is a full-on feast for the senses, with a gothic retelling of the classic fairytale. It’s full of colour, drama and a sprinkling of comedy bought courtesy of baby Aurora. The dance from the cast is truly exquisite, (much like a delicately decorated gateau that has multiple layers of intricate piping) enhanced with a dramatic soundtrack by Tchaikovsky as the backdrop, and sublime atmospheric lighting. The staging and costumes give you so much to look at that one visit would not be enough to see everything. I think this is the first time that I have seen a conveyer belt used in a show, and for dance it all adds to the drama. When you have the power of dance and music to tell such a compelling and moving story that takes you other worldly, there is no need for words, and I find myself surprisingly lost for them. I know, for sure, this will not be the last Matthew Bourne production that I’ll see. Read more
