London, in the 1930s; lonely hearts convene at the Midnight Bell, a boozy tavern where smoke fills the air and a cast of downtrodden characters seek connection. A barmaid spurns the advances of an over-eager customer, a lovesick waiter pines for a sex worker, two men begin a furtive love affair, a spinster seeks company, a sick man embarks on a sinister flight of fancy. Propelled by loneliness and longing, their stories interconnect and unfold into tales of lust, desire, betrayal and redemption, beautifully portrayed by a stunning cast of highly accomplished dancers.“Sexy, smouldering and sad” (The Guardian) The Midnight Bell is inspired by the work of novelist Patrick Hamilton and compiles several characters from his lesser-known novels into one cohesive, “gloriously atmospheric,” (The Standard) piece of dance theatre.
The Midnight Bell originally premiered in 2021 and was a critical success, receiving five nominations at the National Dance Awards, and winning two. Matthew Bourne took home the award for Best Modern Choreography and Michela Meazza, who played the spinster Miss Roach, won the award for Outstanding Female Modern Performance.
