What is Metamorphosis about?

One morning, Gregor Samsa wakes up and finds that he has changed in the most terrifying way. Just hours earlier, he was an average human, but now he is dangerous vermin that no one wants to go near. Worse still: he is a burden to society and about to be crushed under its heel like a cockroach.

A lifetime of quietly getting on with things and working to pay off his family’s debt is brutally wiped away in this sudden, unexpected metamorphosis that exposes the cruelty at the heart of an uncompromising social system.

Kafka’s Classic Meets An Explosive Creative Team

Kafka’s surreal novel Metamorposis is thrillingly adapted for the stage by Lemn Sissay OBE and award-winning theatre company Frantic Assembly.

Frantic Assembly is best known for its bold take on Othello and for collaborating with the National Theatre on Olivier Award-winning play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Sissay is a celebrated writer who was official poet of the 2012 London Olympics. His other plays include Refugee Boy at West Yorkshire Playhouse and Why I Don’t Hate White People, also at Lyric Hammersmith.

Combining Sessay’s lyricism and the powerful physicality that Frantic Assembly has marked themselves out by, this is an unmissable retelling of Kafka’s shocking novella that has already earned acclaim on UK tour.
