What Is the Musical Million Dollar Quartet About?
December 4th, 1956 - musical history is made. When Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and (then) newcomer Jerry Lee Lewis walk into the same Memphis recording studio, a chance meeting sparks a legendary jam session which changed the course of rock’n’roll across the globe.
Egos collide, promises are shattered, and dreams are formed over the course of one remarkable night, as an era-defining soundtrack is recorded.
The show is a fictionalised account of a real jam session between music icons Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins - which began by complete coincidence, with all the artists happening to be in the Sun Records recording studio at the same time, and connected via Perkins. Featuring all your favourite classic songs, including “Blue Suede Shoes”, “Fever”, “Walk The Line” and “Hound Dog”, as well as many more, this thrilling jukebox musical is a must-see for music fans.
The History of Million Dollar Quartet
Million Dollar Quartet initially premiered in Florida, Washington and Chicago before debuting on Broadway in 2010, winning three Tonys, including Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical. The show made its West End debut in 2011, and later returned to NYC for an Off-Broadway run in 2011.
The show is based on a real-life jam session between the artists. A seminal moment in music history, the recording was made in 1956 and later released in Europe in 1981 as The Million Dollar Quartet, following the recording's rediscovery by the head of Sun Records. An album featuring interviews and conversations from the session - Interviews from the Class of '55 Recording Sessions - was also released in 1987, and won the Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album that same year. Later, more tracks were uncovered and were released as The Complete Million Dollar Session, and in 1990, the recordings were released in the United States as Elvis Presley: The Million Dollar Quartet.
