This deliciously dark Tony Award-winning comedy turns history on its head and puts Mary Todd Lincoln in the spotlight.

Oh, Mary! in London!

Oh, Mary! is a hilarious dark comedy that puts First Lady, Mary Todd Lincoln, firmly in the spotlight, telling the story of this famous couple as you’ve never seen them before. Written by Tony Award winner, Pulitzer finalist and self-proclaimed idiot Cole Escola, this hilarious spoof history play dazzled audiences in New York, and London audiences can finally enjoy this “rude, crude, darkly funny, deeply silly” (SeatPlan) show as Oh, Mary! comes to the West End's Trafalgar Theatre, just off Whitehall, at last. Check out our review of Oh,Mary! And book your tickets today!

What Is the Play Oh, Mary! About?

Think you know the story of Abraham Lincoln, his wife Mary Todd Lincoln, and the assassination that rocked a nation? Think again! While everyone might know the story of the American President, who exactly was Mary? Known in the history books as Abraham Lincoln’s wife and mother to his children, the IRL MLT was a troubled and somewhat controversial figure whose life was marred by grief and mental illness.

This riotous black comedy puts a satirical slant on the troubles of this lesser-known First Lady, and runs fast and loose with the facts to shed a queer new light on a not-quite-so-honest Abe. Deliciously dark and sharply satirical, Oh, Mary! uncovers the unrequited yearnings, alcoholism and buried desires of Mrs Lincoln in the weeks leading up to her husband’s assassination, and asks - what were Mary’s dreams when she wasn’t standing dutifully by as First Lady?

Oh Mary! is “the best kind of stupid: a broad, wildly funny comedy that spits in the face of American history” (Variety). The show premiered off-Broadway at the Lucile Lortell Theatre in February 2024 to critical acclaim, receiving several extensions and later transferring to Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre. The show won an Outer Critics Circle Award and an Obie for its off-Broadway run and went on to snatch two Tonys, a GLAAD Media Award and a Drama League Award during its (still ongoing) Broadway run, and was a finalist for the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Catherine Tate took the lead in this show. Not a massive fan, but thought she was very good in this, her comedic timing is excellent. Subject matter deals with sexual orientation, and there are a lot of references to homosexuality, but this is a come Read more
