What Is the Play The Oresteia About?
This new production of The Oresteia at the Bridge Theatre follows a family haunted by their role in an unjust war. As the painful burden of inherited trauma and inter-generational conflict becomes more intense, the family spirals into a powerful vortex of violence.
The History of The Oresteia
Based on a trilogy of Greek tragedies written by Aeschylus in the 5th century BC, The Oresteia has been adapted multiple times into operas and plays, including a rap and hip hop-inspired show by French rapper D’ de Kabal in 2014.
The Oresteia was first staged in London in 1981 by Sir Peter Hall, who directed Tony Harrison’s adaptation at the National Theatre. A subsequent revival at the same theatre took place in 1999. The most notable production was by Robert Icke in 2015 at the Almeida Theatre, where it was a sold-out hit and was transferred in the same year to the Trafalgar Theatre. At this time, there was also another production of it playing at Shakespeare’s Globe in the same year.
The Oresteia Creative Team
The Oresteia will be written and directed by Simon Stone. An Australian director and writer, he has worked on productions across the world. His London debut was in 2016 when he directed a new adaptation of Euripides’ Medea at the Young Vic and starred Billie Piper in the title role. Other credits on the stage include Phaedra, Innocence, and the critically acclaimed production of The Lady from the Sea at the Bridge Theatre in 2025.
This includes set designer Lizzie Clachan, costume designer Mel Page, music by Stefan Gregory, lighting designer Nick Schlieper, and casting director Jessica Ronane CDG.
