What Is The Lives of Others About?
Transport to 1984 East Berlin, where Stasi officer Gerd Wiesler is spying on playwright Georg Dreyman and actress Christa-Maria Sieland from a nearby attic. Whilst Wiesler covertly monitors them for signs of opposition, he becomes absorbed in their lives... and ultimately conflicted by the surveillance and corruption carried out by the GDR regime he serves. Will the power of art be able to change the Stasi officer’s perspective on morality?
The History of The Lives of Others
Inspired by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s childhood visits to East Germany, The Lives of Others was created in response to a fear of a totalitarian state. The film was released in 2006 in Germany, where it was praised for how accurately it recreated the paranoia and clandestine rebellion experienced by people living in the shadow of the Berlin Wall.
It won several awards, including the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film and the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language. The play is the first time it has been adapted for the stage.
