What is the play The Hunger Games: On Stage about?
It’s the not-so-distant future, and sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen lives in the city of Panem, a poor and underprivileged district in a dystopian region of North America. Katniss and her impoverished family just want to get by, following the death of her father several years before. But when the Capitol declares Katniss’ little sister has been chosen as “tribute” for the 74th annual Hunger Games - a fight to the death between teenagers from each district, organised to entertain the citizens of the wealthy and out-of-touch Capitol - Katniss steps up to take her place. What follows is an exhilarating battle for survival and a journey of self-discovery, as Katniss must muster all her courage, defiance and bravery to survive.
This brand new stage adaptation is based on the young adult novel by Suzanne Collins, and the movie adaptation of the same name. The first in a trilogy, The Hunger Games novel was released in 2008, becoming a global smash hit and topping the bestseller charts. The film adaptation, starring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, was released in 2012, also to critical acclaim, and was followed by sequels Catching Fire and Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2. The series has since expanded to include two prequel novels, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and Sunrise on the Reaping, which focus on the youths of adult characters from the novels - including Katniss’s mentor Haymitch and the villainous Coriolanus Snow - which have also been adapted for screen.
