This new adaptation transforms The Who’s iconic multi-million-selling album about a rebellious young Mod into a high-energy dance production, so put on your zoot suit and ride your Vespa down to Sadler's Wells this summer - this is Quadrophenia as you’ve never seen it before.

What is the dance show Quadrophenia about?

An exploration of identity and the quest for belonging, all set against a backdrop of sharp suits, soul music, and scooters, Quadrophenia takes audiences into the heart of 1960s Mod culture. Bored of his dead-end job in a post-room, Mod Jimmy expresses his teen angst by partying, taking drugs and brawling with a rival gang of Rockers. Tensions escalate when both gangs take a trip to Brighton, and Jimmy makes a move on his long-time crush. What ensues is an unforgettable weekend of youthful rebellion and self-discovery.

Originally penned by Pete Townshend in 1973, rock opera Quadrophenia was a multi-million-selling album for The Who, inspiring a 1979 film of the same name. This new adaptation transforms the seminal rock opera into a Mod Ballet, underscored by an orchestral rendition of the original songs. “Sensitive and loyal to the original music throughout” (The Guardian) the music is arranged by Townshend’s wife, composer and songwriter Rachel Fuller, and was first showcased at the Royal Albert Hall as Classic Quadrophenia in 2015.

Who are the cast and creatives of the Quadrophenia ballet?

The cast features Paris Fitzpatrick (Matthew Bourne’s Romeo + Juliet, The Car Man) as Jimmy, with Dan Baines (Balletboyz) as Ace Face and Serena McCall (Message in a Bottle) and Taela Yeomans-Brown (Wicked, Mary Poppins) sharing the role of Mod Girl.

Quadrophenia is based on the sixth studio album by rock band The Who, and is the band’s only album penned entirely by co-founder, second lead vocalist and guitarist Pete Townshend. Townshend is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter and has previously been nominated for an Academy Award for his work scoring and adapting the music on Tommy, a film adaptation of another The Who album. Often considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time, Townshend is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and has received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award as a member of The Who.

Quadrophenia is directed by Tony, Olivier and Emmy Award-winning director and choreographer Rob Ashford (Evita, Thoroughly Modern Millie), with choreography by VMA award winner Paul Roberts, who has worked with artists such as Harry Styles, Sam Smith and The Spice Girls. Orchestration is by Rachel Fuller (Ash, Classic Quadrophenia) and Martin Batchelar (The Who at the BBC), projections are by Nick Hillel (The Light Princess) and lighting design is by Fabiana Piccioli (Akram Khan’s Giselle).

No Mod would be complete without their Paul Smith - Quadrophenia also features original costumes by the iconic fashion house and Natalie Pryce (Small Island).

The music and score are incredible as were the dancers. I love ballet and so think if you love contemporary dance then you will love it. It’s quite emotive in parts and really does a great job to mimic some elements of the film. The shows graphics an Read more

The dancing and choreography is top notch as you would expect. I couldn’t remember the story so was a bit lost as to what was going on. I got bored but that was just me, everyone around me thought it was brilliant.

Here to see the classic ‘Quadrophenia’ on stage – a cult film and also The Who’s iconic album told through the medium of dance (mod ballet). At times I found the story hard to follow without any dialogue, as scenes were changing from present day to p Read more
