Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey assumes the crown of England as Richard II at the Bridge Theatre, in a new revival directed by Nicholas Hytner. Shakespeare’s beautiful History play, set at the crossroads of feudal and modern England, is a powerful account of a divinely sanctioned monarch whose mercurial ways are challenged by a pragmatic future king.

About Shakespeare’s Richard II

Richard II is a charismatic, eloquent man beloved by his friends. He is also a fickle disaster of a monarch, with a penchant for dishonesty and incompetence in the political sphere. Is his divine right to rule more important than the country’s stability? And will anyone dare to confront him?

As relatable now as it was 500 years ago, Shakespeare’s lyrical and subtle play is a gripping story about a king who has a God-given right to rule but seems intent on squandering his authority. Featuring Henry Bolingbroke - later Henry IV - as the contender for the throne, it is the first part of the Henriad, which includes Henry IV Parts 1 and 2 and Henry V.

Jonathan Bailey in Richard II

Jonathan Bailey returns to the stage for the first time since 2022’s Cock as Richard II. Bailey is an Olivier Award-winning actor for his performance in Company in the West End. His other credits include Cassio in Othello at the National Theatre and Edgar in King Lear opposite Sir Ian McKellen and he is set to appear as Fiyero in the film adaptation of Wicked.

He is best known for his television roles in Broadchurch, W1A, Chewing Gum and more recently, as Lord Anthony Bridgerton in Bridgerton and Timothy Laughlin in Fellow Travelers.

Bailey is directed in Richard II by Bridge Theatre Artistic Director Nicholas Hytner. Hytner is an Olivier and Tony Award winner for work including The History Boys and Carousel, and at the Bridge has created incredible immersive productions of classics including Guys and Dolls (starring Marisha Wallace and Daniel Mays), Julius Caesar (starring Ben Whishaw) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (starring Gwendoline Christie).

In all a good performance. Well directed & produced. A very sparse set design - hydraulics meant different scenes would rise up from below the stage. All actors were in modern dress, mostly suits, which added to the play’s politics. . The acting w Read more
