Verdi’s Rigoletto Tickets On Sale Now

Dive into the backstreets of 1950s Little Italy as Jonathan Miller’s acclaimed staging of Rigoletto returns to the London Coliseum. Verdi’s famous opera is a story of love, revenge, jealousy and a wisecrack that starts a war - and, boasting some of the most immediately familiar music in the entire genre, the perfect introduction for newcomers and an enduring favourite for fans.

About the Rigoletto Opera

Written and composed in the 1800s but strikingly relocated to 1950s New York City, Rigoletto is the story of a quick-witted mobster whose mouth gets him into trouble. When an ill-judged joke sparks a deadly grudge, the spotlight is now on Rigoletto as the depraved Duke seduces his daughter Gilda. Incensed, he vows to avenge her honour and his family’s name.

Rigoletto is one of Verdi’s most-performed operas, with a sweeping score including “La donna è mobile” (“Women abandon us”); a melody that has been featured in films, adverts, radio broadcasts and more. If this production ignites a taste for the Italian’s work, the other two of his “big three” are l trovatore and La traviata; Luisa Miller is also regularly performed.

Jonathan Miller’s Rigoletto - Cast and Creatives

Acclaimed opera director Jonathan Miller - celebrated for his “captivating” (The Stage) 1930s interpretation of La Boheme - turns the opera into a fast-paced saga set in New York’s gangster world. Combining the rich notes of Verdi’s score with the familiar beats of films like The Godfather, audiences will be thrilled by this “dramatic and complex” (The Guardian) show.

The cast includes Weston Hurt as Rigoletto, Yongzhao Yu as the Duke, Robyn Allegra Parton as Gilda, Amy Holyland as Maddalena, the assassin’s sister, and Patrick Alexander Keefe as Marullo. This revival is directed by Elaine Tyler-Hall, and former Music Director of Opera North, Richard Farnes, conducts.

You don't go to the traditional opera for the story lines! This one has some particularly problematic issues regarding the treatment of women. So basically, ignore all that and listen to the music/singing!

Interesting production, Gilda was especially good vocally. You do have to be patient because it is only in Act 3, that you get 'La donna è mobile' and the glorious counterpoint and harmonies.
