Daniel Radcliffe and Joshua McGuire starred in Tom Stoppard’s classic play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead as it returned to The Old Vic for its 50 year anniversary in an exciting version directed by David Leveaux.

Fifty years after it first premiered there, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead returned to the Old Vic stage in a revival staring Daniel Radcliffe and Joshua McGuire. The show began previews on the 25th February 2017 and ran until 29th April 2017.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead was the play that instantly turned Tom Stoppard from a budding playwright to one of the most revered dramatists of the 20th century. The play first debuted at the Old Vic on the 11 April 1967, with John Stride as Rosencrantz and Edward Petherbridge as Guildenstern. This new production celebrated the 50th anniversary of the masterpiece returning it once again to the Old Vic stage.

The play is an absurdist, existentialist tragicomedy which often draws comparisons with Samuel Beckett's classic Waiting for Godot. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead focuses on the exploits of two of the minor characters from the William Shakespeare play Hamlet. The play hilariously depicts the off-stage action, with brief intersects with major characters and original scenes as the pair become increasingly confused by the events that happen on stage without them. The play is one of the most brilliant mind-bending iconic dramas to have ever been written.

This version was directed by the acclaimed director, David Leveaux who is known for his previous work with Stoppard that has included Jumpers in 2003, Arcadia in 2009 and The Real Thing in 1999 for which he received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Director.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead starred Daniel Radcliffe and Joshua McGuire. Daniel Radcliffe is best known for his long time role as Harry Potter in the Hollywood blockbuster series of the same name, since the age of ten. Since then he has starred in a range of hit films including Kill Your Darlings and The Woman In Black as well as popular stage productions such as the West End and Broadways versions of Equus and the New York revival of the musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Joshua McGuire is known for his various roles in film and on stage, including Posh, Future Conditional and The Magistrate.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead was one of Tom Stoppard’s earliest plays and the one that catapulted him to stage stardom. Since that time he has gone on to win countless awards including an Academy Award and four Tony Awards, as well as being knighted. His work includes acclaimed plays such as Travesties, Arcadia and Rock N’ Roll as well as popular films such as Anna Karenina, Shakespeare in Love and Brazil.

A double act to rival the greats, Josh McGuire and Daniel Radcliffe bounce off each other wonderfully, bringing humour and lightness to this Stoppard play. There's also a delightful turn from David Haig to round-off a top show!
