By the pricking of my thumbs, here’s a Shakespeare play for little ones! Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and Splendid Productions join forces once again this summer, with another magical reworking of a classic story. Rough Magic, based on Macbeth, is a supernaturally silly, “‘wildly entertaining” (The Stage) adventure at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse near the Tate Modern.
What is Rough Magic about?
Gather around the cauldron, children, the Weird Sisters are cooking up something special… Some of the ingredients might sound strange - eye of newt? Toe of frog? But don’t worry, these magical creatures are for fun, not eating! Join Shakespeare’s wonderfully mischievous and wayward characters in this engaging show for ages 5-105.
Inspired by Macbeth, Rough Magic introduces kids to the plays' best characters - the three witches who swoop in to deliver strange messages then disappear as the tragedy unfolds.
The Perfect Show for Young Theatregoers
Created for Shakespeare’s Globe in collaboration with Splendid Productions, Rough Magic is a play aimed at children, created by Globe Director of Education Lucy Cuthbertson and Splendid’s Kerry Frampton and Ben Hales. It brings the magic of Macbeth ’s famous witches - and their strange prophecies - to life with absurdly fun costumes, brilliant props, slapstick fun and lots of twists that will have you in fits of laughter.
It follows the troupe’s acclaimed Midsummer Mechanicals, a chaotic and interactive “sequel” to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. With the tragic parts taken out and the magic ramped up, these brand-new takes on the Bard’s greatest hits are the perfect introduction to not only his plays but the incredible Bankside venue in which they are performed. So get ready to take your seats in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse; this indoor theatre is lit by real candlelight - even more atmospheric fun to delight budding young theatre fans.

Family show, lots of audience participation and silly puns, with plenty of Shakespeare references and knowing looks for the adults. Only open to ‘non-humans’ but would recommend.
