Oscar Wilde’s scandalous one-act masterpiece Salome returns to the West End in a daring new production at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. This English-language staging is a co-production between London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket and Tel Aviv’s Gesher Theatre, following its premiere at Jaffa Fest 2024. Directed by Maxim Didenko, this reimagining of Wilde’s sensuous, controversial play strips away the decadence to reveal a raw, ritualistic exploration of power, obsession, and desire.
What is the play Salome about?
Set in the court of Herod Antipas, Salome follows the titular princess as she becomes infatuated with the imprisoned prophet Jokanaan (John the Baptist). Her desire leads to a chilling climax, as she demands his head in exchange for a dance that captivates the court. Wilde’s poetic text delves into themes of lust, manipulation, and the destructive nature of obsession.
Oscar Wilde wrote Salome in 1891, in French, inspired by the biblical story of the daughter of Herodias. The play was banned in England due to its depiction of biblical characters, leading to its first performance in Paris in 1896. Since then, Salome has been adapted numerous times, most notably in Richard Strauss's 1905 opera. In Britain, the play faced censorship until 1931, with its first public performance at the Savoy Theatre. Notable revivals include Steven Berkoff's 1988 production and Yaël Farber's 2017 adaptation at the National Theatre.
Performed in English, with Russian and Hebrew subtitles, Didenko's production continues this legacy of reinvention, offering a contemporary lens on Wilde's provocative text, emphasising the psychological and spiritual turmoil of the characters. Salome challenges audiences to confront the darker aspects of human desire and the consequences of unchecked power. This promises to be unmissable theatre - secure your tickets today.
