On Sale Now: Shifters Tickets

Is it destiny, or chance? Following a sold-out season at Bush Theatre, get ready to fall for hit modern rom-com Shifters as it transfers to the West End’s Duke of York’s Theatre. This “smouldering and soulful” (Time Out) two-hander play about the intoxicating memories of first love, and the second chances offered when a former couple meet again, is a must-see for anyone who wants to enjoy a different kind of love story.

What is Shifters about?

Dre and Des are young, Black and gifted. He stayed, but she left. Years later, their lives crash back together, weighed down by new secrets and old scars. With limited time before Des has to leave again, the pair reminisce about their teen years and confront their present until one question demands to be answered… has destiny reunited them for a reason?

Shifters is a “tender, cosmic and cleverly unpredictable love story” (The Stage) about the bittersweet memories of young love. It premiered to sold-out crowds at the Bush Theatre in February 2024.

Cast and Creative Team

Shifters is Benedict Lombe’s follow-up to the acclaimed monologue Lava, which won the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for Playwrighting. Both of her works have debuted at the Bush Theatre, and her powerful, imaginative voice now makes the jump to a larger stage for the first time. Lombe follows Natasha Gordon (Nine Night) and Yasmin Joseph (J’Ouvert) as the third Black British female playwright to have a play performed in the West End.

Bush Theatre Artistic Director, Lynette Linton (Blues for an Alabama Sky, August in England) directs. Linton was nominated for a BAFTA for her work on television drama My Name Is Leon in 2023.

The Bush cast transfers with the show - the “tremendous” (The Observer) Tosin Cole (Doctor Who, Hollyoaks) and “irresistible” (London Theatre) Heather Agyepong (School Girls; or, The African Mean Girls Play) light up the stage as old flames who find their passions reignited.

A beautifully executed piece of writing, performances were nuanced but also funny, moving and brilliant. Subtle sound effects. Simple setting and lighting made this all the more enjoyable to watch two brilliant performances.
