What is it about?Sister Act The Musical follows lounge singer Deloris, whose world is turned upside down when her boyfriend commits murder and she’s placed in witness protection. Hidden in the lofty halls of a convent, under the eye of the haughty Mother Superior, Deloris struggles to adapt to her regimented new home… until she discovers a calling: to get the convent choir in pitch-perfect form.
Set to gospel-inspired songs including “Take Me to Heaven” and “Spread the Love Around”, Sister Act The Musical is a hilarious and uplifting tale of friendship that proves disco divas and religious sisters can both learn some brand new habits.
Who is in it?Whoopi Goldberg stars as Deloris, returning to the role that earned her international acclaim in Sister Act and Sister Act: Back in the Habit.
She is joined by comedy legend Jennifer Saunders as Mother Superior, fresh from a turn in Blithe Spirit at the Duke of York’s Theatre. Saunders follows in the footsteps of Goldberg herself, who played the role at the London Palladium; and Dame Maggie Smith and Sheila Hancock.
Please note that Loose Women co-host and Hairspray star Brenda Edwards will step into the role of Deloris on Thursday matinees. Edwards is also playing Deloris on the UK tour.
Who is the creative team?Sister Act boasts an award-winning creative team headed up by producers Whoopi Goldberg and Jamie Wilson (Nativity! The Musical and On Your Feet!)
Disney legend and eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken (Newsies; Little Shop of Horrors) provides music, with lyrics from three-time Tony Award nominee Glenn Slater (School of Rock) and a book by Bill and Sheri Steinkellner and Douglas Carter Beane.
The director is yet to be announced.
How long is it?This new production of Sister Act doesn’t have a running time, but the 2016 UK tour clocked in at 2 hours, 20 minutes.
