What is the pantomime Sleeping Beauty about?

On the eve of her 18th birthday, the kind-hearted Princess Beauty is cursed by the jealous fairy Carabosse and she learns that a little prick (to the finger!) can be deadly, falling into a magical slumber. Can the handsome Prince wake her with true love's kiss, or will the wicked fairy halt their happy ending…?

Known as the home of variety, the Palladium has hosted pantos since the 1920s, with casts boasting such stars as Norman Wisdom, Frankie Howard, Tommy Cooper, and musical theatre Grande Dame Julie Andrews, who starred in Cinderella in 1958. In the 80s, panto at the Palladium paused for 29 years, until Andrew Lloyd Webber revived the beloved tradition in 2016 and it once more became a festive staple, winning the Olivier Award for Best Family Show in 2017.

Sleeping Beauty marks ten years since the revival of the Palladium Panto, and is jam-packed with hit songs, hilarious jokes for big kids and little ones alike, spectacular special effects and dazzling costumes. This show is “panto gold” (What’s on Stage) so don’t be caught snoozing - snap up your tickets today and let Sleeping Beauty cast its spell this Christmas.

Catherine Tate's Magical Debut: The Palladium Panto Cast

Catherine Tate makes her Palladium panto debut as Carabosse, the villainous fairy who curses Sleeping Beauty. A BAFTA winner and Emmy nominee, comedian, actor and writer Tate is best known for her role as Donna Noble in Doctor Who, and for her hilarious sketch show The Catherine Tate Show, where she performed as iconic characters including foulmouthed OAP Nan and chavvy teenager Lauren “am I bovvered” Cooper. Tate is no stranger to the stage either, performing opposite her Doctor Who co-star David Tennant in Much Ado About Nothing at Wyndham's Theatre, in Season's Greetings at the National Theatre and The Vote at Donmar Warehouse.

Tate joins panto royalty as legendary comedian, Celebrity Big Brother winner and Taskmaster star Julian Clary returns for another innuendo-filled year, taking on the role of King Julian. Impressionist Jon Culshaw (Dead Ringers, Spitting Image) - who made a cameo at last year's production of Robin Hood - joins as a full cast member, playing the role of King Julian’s Private Detective.

The cast also includes returning Palladium Panto favourites Nigel Havers (Coronation Street, Chariots of Fire) as Keeper of the Privy, Rob Madge (My Son’s A Queer (But What Can You Do?), Matilda) as The Diva of Dreams, America’s Got Talent winning ventriloquist Paul Zerdin (Tricky Business, The Big Big Talent Show) as The Great Zerdini (along with his puppet, Sam of course!), and West End stars Emily Lane (Hello, Dolly!, Frozen) and Amonik Melaco (Singin’ in the Rain, The Bodyguard) as Princess Beauty and the Prince.

Who are the creative team of Sleeping Beauty?

Sleeping Beauty is produced and directed by Michael Harrison (Gypsy, The Bodyguard). The creative team is comprised of a number of returning professionals from previous Palladium pantos including set designer Mark Walters, lighting designer Ben Cracknell, sound designer Matt Peploe and composition and orchestrations by Gary Hind. Choreography is by Karen Bruce, with visual special effects by The Twins FX, and a costume design team including Mike Coltman, Teresa Nolton and Hugh Durrant - who designs Clary’s notoriously fabulous costumes.
