So Are We: Leon & Lightfoot in London
The Royal Ballet Company presents an exciting double-bill of contemporary work this year, as Sol León and Paul Lightfoot’s So Are We opens at the Royal Opera House near Covent Garden. Comprising two individual shows - Shoot the Moon and Salle de Dance - brought together for one exhilarating performance, this is a stirring, passionate mix of old and new from the acclaimed choreographer team, and marks the first time a British company has performed the duo’s work.
About Leon & Lightfoot’s So Are We
So Are We is a mixed programme that matches Leon & Lightfoot’s classic work Shoot the Moon with newly staged piece Salle de Dance.
Shoot the Moon celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, following its world premiere in the Netherlands in 2006. This intimate piece reflects on themes of solitude within relationships, as three couples teeter on the edge of intimacy and separation. With its expressive, fluid movement and yearning music, this is a contemporary classic that stands the test of time. It is scored by Academy Award-winning American composer Philip Glass (The Hours, The Truman Show) and his melodic Tirol Concerto.
Salle de Dance is a new world premiere stage performance, adapted from the filmed version by Leon & Lightfoot. The original version was created during lockdown as a celebration of the balletic art form, and it now leaps onto the stages that inspired it. Inspired by a dancer’s daily study of ballet classes, it is performed on a bare stage, with the power of dance right at the fore. It is set to a new score by award-winning composer Ilya Demutsky (A Hero of Our Time).
