What Is Sunday in the Park with George About?
Inspired by the painting Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, Sunday in the Park with George follows the artist Georges Seurat as he struggles to create meaningful art, discover his artistic voice, and maintain a relationship with his lover Dot. Then, a century later, descendants of George and Dot find themselves in the same situation, and they begin to realise the answers to their future lie in the past.
The History of Sunday in the Park with George
Sunday in the Park with George debuted in an Off-Broadway production in 1983, then transferred to Broadway at the Booth Theatre a year later. Its first London production was at the National Theatre in 1990, starring Philip Quast and Maria Friedman. It had subsequent revivals on Broadway and in London, with the last at the Menier Chocolate Factory over 20 years ago.
The musical has won multiple awards, including the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, two Tony Awards, and several Drama Desk Awards. Sunday in the Park with George has also won two Olivier Awards, including Best Musical.

Jonathan Bailey stars in the production as George. Recently, Bailey starred in the Wicked movie franchise as Fiyero, as well as playing the titular role of Richard II at the Bridge Theatre. His performance in the West End revival of Company earned him an Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical. He has also starred in the popular Netflix series Bridgerton and Jurassic World Rebirth in 2025.
Ariana Grande, the American singer and Jonathan Bailey’s co-star in the Wicked films, makes her London stage debut as Dot. Considered as one of the best-selling music artists of all time, Ariana has won several awards, including three Grammy Awards and a Brit Award. Her debut on stage was in the Original Broadway cast of 13.

This new revival at the Barbican is directed by Marianne Elliott. Her credits include the award-winning productions of War Horse, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Angels in America, and Company.
She will be joined by designer Tom Scutt, who was recently nominated for the 2025 Olivier Awards for Best Set and Costume Design. His previous credits include Fiddler on the Roof, Cabaret, and Little Shop of Horrors.
