Classic opera and modern musical combine for the world premiere of The Fabulist at Charing Cross Theatre. In 1920s Italy, wandering fabulist - or top magician to the average person - Agrofontido is on the run from Mussolini and the Catholic Church. When he finds unexpected sanctuary on a bustling film set, he also finds something else: love. Smitten by eccentric screenwriter Clarice, Agrofontido is eager to win her hand in marriage… but romance is never simple.Inspired by Giovanni Paisiello’s comedy operetta The Imaginary Astrologer - which was written for Catherine the Great - The Fabulist is a fast-paced and surprising new musical celebrating its world premiere at one of London’s most popular Off West End venues.
Creative Team
The Fabulist features music from Paisiello, who is best known for his bubbly, uplifting compositions. Paisiello was not only one of Rossini’s (The Barber of Seville) inspirations, he was also a favourite of Catherine the Great and Napoleon - and even composed the latter’s coronation music.Writer James Farwell’s book takes some of the highlights of Paisiello’s work to create a new story set in 1920s Tuscany, when Mussolini’s fascist regime was at its height. It combines the sounds and themes of a classic with the exciting freshness of a new story about romance and self-discovery.
The show is directed by John Walton, with set and costume design by David Shields, lighting design by Fridthjofur Thorsteinsson, sound design by Andrew Johnson and musical direction and orchestration by Bobby Goulder.

Excellent production, with very pleasant music ( which sounded "Mozartian" to me) and the opera singers were all of the highest quality and melded well together. The amusing "magic" tricks certainly added to the overall fun in the performance
