What is the play The Lady from the Sea about?
On the surface, Ellida couldn’t ask for more - she is married to Edward, a well-off doctor and lives a comfortable, if boring, life in a remote country house. Underneath it all, however, she is deeply unhappy. Haunted by her past, Ellida worries she may have settled too easily for a life she never wanted and seeks to break the routine of her humdrum existence. Her prayers may be answered when a mysterious stranger arrives at the couple’s home, but when he is revealed to be a former lover of Ellida’s, she must choose between the life she has built for herself and the history she left behind.
The Lady from the Sea is originally written by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. The play was inspired by the Scandinavian ballad Agnete and the Merman, and first premiered in 1889, receiving simultaneous premieres in Kristiania, Norway and Weimar, Germany. The play has since received many revivals, including productions in New York, Germany and Stockholm, and a production at the Roundhouse London starring Vanessa Redgrave. The Lady from the Sea has been adapted several times into different mediums, including a ballet, a mixed-media performance adaptation titled Sounding, a Radio 3 drama and two operas. This thrilling new imagining by Simon Stone is a modern interpretation, adapting Ibsen’s timeless examination of grief, marriage and freedom for a contemporary age.

The Lady from the Sea London Reviews
User Reviews
The family dialogue was seriously annoying, and one character seemed to be entirely pointless. However, a lot can be forgiven when you have a class act like Andrew Lincoln on stage and a bit of water...
