What is the opera The Marriage of Figaro about?

Set over the course of a single “mad day,” clever plans, disguises and intrigues unfold as Figaro, valet to Count Almaviva, and his fiancée Susanna prepare for their wedding - only to be thwarted by the Count’s inappropriate attention toward Susanna.

Figaro and Susanna team up with the long-suffering Countess to outwit the Count, while Cherubino - the Count’s page - pursues his youthful crushes, and long‑buried truths are revealed in a finale filled with forgiveness and celebration. Mozart’s sparkling score is rich with character, wit and empathy, and has made Figaro, and songs such as “Dove sono” and “Non più andrai”, a cornerstone of the operatic repertory for over two centuries.

The History of The Marriage of Figaro

Le nozze di Figaro, or The Marriage of Figaro, is based on Pierre Beaumarchais’ play Le Mariage de Figaro, a sequel to The Barber of Seville, famously adapted by Gioachino Rossini, and marked the first collaboration between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte - the pair would go on to collaborate further on Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte. The opera premiered in 1786 at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 1 May 1786, with Mozart himself conducting the first two performances,

Beaumarchais’ original play was scandalous in its day, banned for its bold satire of aristocratic privilege and commentary on class inequality. To bring it to the Viennese stage, Da Ponte softened much of the political edge while preserving its biting wit and intricate plot. The resulting opera was a triumph: The Marriage of Figaro quickly sold out in Vienna and became a sensation in Prague, where Mozart wrote of hearing “nothing but Figaro!” in the streets.

The Royal Opera’s staging by David McVicar, first seen in 2006, moves the action to a French château in 1830, on the eve of the July Revolution. McVicar’s interpretation delves into the play’s class tensions and revolutionary undercurrents while celebrating the opera’s humour, energy and emotional nuance - qualities that have made Figaro a timeless favourite for over two centuries.
