A shadow at the door, strange noises in the night, and children who might be possessed… experience the menace and psychological thrills of Benjamin Britten’s The Turn of the Screw at London Coliseum, performed by the English National Opera. This haunting tale of a governess terrorised by invisible forces is one of opera’s most unnervingly beautiful stories, where nothing is as it seems.

About The Turn of the Screw Opera

A young and inexperienced governess arrives at a remote and bleak country house, where two orphaned children are waiting. Deeply troubled and possibly possessed by malign spirits, the children are under her care… but can she keep them safe?

Tension builds until your nerves are rattled in Benjamin Britten’s famously spooky opera, which has an incredible and innovative score. As the mood darkens and anxiety rises, so does the eeriness - and like many horror films that followed it, Britten’s music weaves nursery rhymes into its melodies to create a chilling feeling of unease.

Britten’s Turn of the Screw - Creative Team

Benjamin Britten is one of the most famous names in British opera, and has come to define the country’s style in the genre for millions of people across the world. His best-known works include Peter Grimes, which premiered at Sadler’s Wells in 1945. In The Turn of the Screw, his music is accompanied by Myfanwy Piper’s libretto, adapted from Henry James’ 1898 novella.

The show is directed and designed by Isabella Bywater, whose staging of Symphony of Sorrowful Songs at the Coliseum was praised for its “hauntingly beautiful” (The Times) vision. Duncan Ward conducts, with Charlotte Corderoy also conducting on 29 and 31 October.

The cast includes Ailish Tynan as the Governess, Eleanor Dennis as Miss Jessel and Robert Murray as Peter Quint.
