The award-winning Blanche McIntyre directs the Bard’s bloodiest play, brimming with bitter power struggles, corruption and betrayal this primal production brings RSC’s epic Rome season to a spectacular conclusion. Titus Andronicus’s vicious examination of sexuality, class and family arrives at the Barbican for a limited run from December 2017. The play follows our titular protagonist on his weary return from a cruel decade-long war, leaving a score of deceased sons littering the abandoned battlefields behind him. Betrayed by his nation, his family torn asunder, Titus finds himself spiralling into a violent cycle of bloody revenge. With the help of Tamora, Queen of the Goths, a frenzy of rape, cannibalism, mutilation and murder ensues, drenching the Roman streets in blood. Blanche McIntyre returns to the RSC following her critically-acclaimed production of The Two Noble Kinsmen. She directs David Troughton, RSC Associate Artist, whose theatre credits include title roles in Macbeth, Henry IV and Richard III. Joining director Blanche McIntyre on the creative team is celebrated designer Robert Innes Hopkins, composer Tim Sutton, with sound by Emma Laxton. RSC associate lighting designer Malcolm Rippeth brings his singular style to the production, with movement and fight choreographed by Georgina Lamb and Philip d’Orléans. Titus Andronicus’s marks the final play in the RSC’s scintillating Rome MMXVII season which transfers to the Barbican stage winter 2017. Alongside the play audiences will be treated to season director Angus Jackson’s incredible adaptations of Coriolanus and Julius Caesar, with the renowned Iqbal Khan helming his own imaginative version of Anthony and Cleopatra. This searing production arrives on the Barbican stage for a limited run from the 7th December 2017 to the 19th January 2018.
