What is the opera Turandot about?
Turandot tells the story of a fiercely guarded Chinese princess who decrees she will only marry the man who can solve her three riddles - a challenge that has cost many suitors their lives. Into this climate of icy intimidation steps Prince Calaf, who succeeds with courage and passion, forging a dramatic and emotionally charged confrontation with Turandot’s implacable resolve. Alongside hulking choruses, thrilling ensembles and some of Puccini’s most iconic music, the opera explores themes of fear, defiance, love and redemption.
The History of Turandot
Inspired by a Persian fairy tale and drawing on Chinese and Italian theatrical tradition, Turandot was the final opera composed by Giacomo Puccini, who died in 1924 before completing the final act. The ending was later completed by Franco Alfano, using Puccini’s sketches. At the world premiere in 1926 at La Scala, Milan, conductor Arturo Toscanini famously stopped the performance in Act III, turning to the audience to say, “At this point, the Maestro died.” Later performances included Alfano’s full ending.
Since then, Turandot has become one of the most frequently staged operas in the world. Its fusion of mythic storytelling, lavish spectacle and iconic music, including the unforgettable aria “Nessun Dorma”, continues to captivate audiences nearly a century later. This Royal Opera House staging is a revival of Andrei Șerban’s acclaimed production, first created in 1984 and a long‑standing favourite in the company’s repertory.
