What Is the Musical West Side Story About?

West Side Story takes us to 1950s New York, where two young lovers are caught in the rivalry between two street gangs, the white American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. The relationship between Maria and Tony becomes strained by the conflict and prejudice between the two gangs, ultimately leading to tragic consequences.

The original Broadway production of West Side Story was staged at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1957 and was significant as it marked Stephen Sondheim’s debut. It won two of the six Tony Awards it was nominated for. It is one of the most recognised musical theatre productions, with many subsequent productions taking place across the world, including multiple West End productions. West Side Story is probably best known for the 1961 musical film adaptation, which won ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
