Hito no Chikara translates as “The Power of Human Strength”, and each drum strike resonates with resilience and passion, a celebration of physical and emotional strength in an age shaped by digital technology. The History of Yamato Drummers

Taiko drumming has deep roots in Japanese history, where large barrel-shaped drums were traditionally used in religious ceremonies, festivals and community gatherings to mark time, signal events and unite people through rhythm. The word taiko simply means “drum”, but the form encompasses a wide range of styles, from ceremonial shrine music to regional folk traditions. Modern ensemble taiko, developed in the 20th century, transformed these traditions into a dynamic performance art, combining powerful, synchronised drumming with choreographed movement and intense physical discipline. Today, taiko is recognised worldwide for its ability to convey energy, unity and human connection through sound.

Yamato’s origins lie in this rich history, and since forming in the 1990s, the company has pushed this heritage into theatrical contexts, crafting showpieces that combine athletic performance with musical precision, bringing their previous show Wings of the Phoenix to London twice to critical acclaim.
