Spectacle, energy and rhythm burst from the stage in The Wings of Phoenix, reminding audiences exactly why the Yamato company has been so successful for three decades. The centuries-old art of Japanese taiko drumming - often associated with Shinto rituals - is pushed to its limits by Yamato’s world-class team, who redefine the boundaries of this cultural tradition and leave theatregoers breathless in the process. The Wings of Phoenix follows Yamato’s last appearance in London for Passion, which was hailed a “fabulous and unexpectedly varied night out” (Culture Whisper).Who are the Yamato drummers?
Since establishing their troupe in Japan’s Nara Prefecture in 1993, the Wadaiko Yamato drummers have toured 54 different countries and regions and performed over 4,500 shows to almost 8 million people. This incredible Japanese drumming group defines its work as “physical music”, with more than 40 drums and drummers on stage coming together to create a symphony of sound, emotion and unforgettable rhythm. Always a great show - and they didn't disappoint. Yes, there are drums - big ones, small ones.. and even teeny little cymbals! At one point, they introduce a row of shamisen to mix it up. But this is really all about the drums - and the view doesn't really matter (although the stage set is beautiful), it's the rhythm we've come for, which can be heard a long way away. In fact, there are warnings outside about the volume of the music, and I'm always rather glad not to be too close to the stage for this sort of thing. They have developed a most varied act over the years, with a fair deal of comedy, and audience interaction. So you're never bored. After the interval, the curtain comes down for a while, as the audience is entertained with a comedic turn - sure enough, this is to give them time to bring on the famous big drums for the finale. And I swear, the sheer force of the noise is spectacular. Never gets old, this act. Highly recommended. Read more
