Ainadamar Tickets: Opera Meets Latin at the Met Opera

Celebrated Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov’s Grammy Award-winning Ainadamar comes to the Met Opera this year in a striking staging by Cirque du Soleil’s Deborah Colker. This ambitious show, inspired by the life and assassination of Frederico Garcia Lorca, is a richly rewarding contemporary opera that melds classic and modern musical influences from across the globe.

What is Ainadamar about?

Combining opera and passion play conventions, Ainadamar is the story of Spanish poet and playwright Frederico Garcia Lorca (Blood Wedding; Yerma), who was assassinated by Fascists during the Spanish Civil War on charges of socialism and homosexuality. His life story emerges through the memories of his muse, Catalan actress Margarita Xirgu, as she speaks to her protege Nuria.

Boasting a melting pot of influences including flamenco guitars, electronic music and classical 19th-century orchestrations, this vibrant and bold contemporary opera stands shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the European greats in the new Met Opera season.

Cast and Creative Team

Ainadamar is Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov’s first opera and the recipient of two Grammy Awards, for Best Opera Recording (2006), and Best Classical Contemporary Composition. It features a libretto by Pulitzer-nominated US playwright David Henry Hwang, best known for M. Butterfly and Yellow Face.

Miguel Harth-Bedoya makes his Met Opera debut conducting this passionate story of art and sacrifice, in a production directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker. Colker has worked extensively with Cirque du Soleil and for Ainadamar stages a vivid and energetic production that combines flamenco and rumba influences against the turbulent backdrop of civil war.

The cast includes sopranos Angel Blue and Gabriella Reyes as Margarita Xirgu, soprano Elena Villalón as Nuria, mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack performing in a trouser role as Lorca, and flamenco singer Alfredo Tejada as Ramón Ruiz Alonso.
