What is the Kavalier & Clay opera about?
This compelling opera introduces us to Josef “Joe” Kavalier, a Jewish artist escaping Nazi‑occupied Prague, and his cousin Sammy Clay, a Brooklyn‑born aspiring writer. Together, they invent The Escapist, an anti‑fascist comic‑book superhero designed to inspire America in the fight against Nazism. Set in the golden age of comics, the narrative weaves together three distinct worlds - war‑torn Europe, bustling 1940s New York and the fantastical realm of comic‑book imagination.
Originally conceived from Michael Chabon’s celebrated 2000 novel of the same name, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2001, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay has been six years in the making and is a co‑production between the Metropolitan Opera and Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. It first premiered in Indiana in November 2024, under conductor Michael Christie, ahead of its New York debut. Commissioned by the Met as part of its Neubauer Family Foundation New Works Initiative, it showcases bold contemporary storytelling and cross‑disciplinary creativity.
