Bug on Broadway in New York City!

Steppenwolf Theatre’s acclaimed staging of Bug, by Pultizter and Tony-winning playwright Tracy Letts, makes its Broadway debut. This dynamic “obscenely exciting” (New York Times) play about the romance and paranoia shared by two broken people comes to the Samuel J Friedman Theatre, in the heart of Times Square, this winter. Bug is sexy, scintillating and “a reminder of all the things to love about live theater” (New City Stage) - secure your tickets today.

What is the play Bug on Broadway about?

When a lonely cocktail waitress, Agnes, and a mysterious young drifter, Peter, meet in a seedy motel room in a small town in Oklahoma, a connection soon sparks between the two damaged people. But what begins as a way for the two to escape their troubled lives quickly spirals into something much more sinister. As Peter shares his conspiracy theories with Agnes, his paranoia and delusions begin to infect her, and the couple’s grip on reality begins to slip.

Bug premiered at the Gate Theatre, London, 1996 and later made its US debut in 2000, transferring off-Broadway in 2004. The off-Broadway run won several Obie and Lucille Lortel awards, and the play was adapted into a movie of the same name starring Michael Shannon, who originated the role of Peter. Bug has since become a cult favorite, and has received several revivals both in the US and overseas. In 2020, Steppenwolf Theatre’s revival received critical acclaim, despite having to pause the production mid-run until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the Chicago Tribune declaring it as “thrilling—the greatest Bug ever”. Now, this Broadway premiere transfers Steppenwolf’s explosive production from Chicago to New York.
