What is the opera Carmen about?

Carmen is a gripping tale of passion and jealousy, as soldier Don José falls under the spell of the fiery and free-spirited Carmen after she’s arrested for a fight in Seville. Abandoning his post and sweetheart Micaëla, José follows Carmen into a dangerous world of smugglers and rebellion. But when Carmen’s affections shift to the charismatic toreador Escamillo, José’s obsession spirals into tragedy. Set to some of opera’s most iconic melodies, Carmen is a powerful exploration of desire, freedom, and fatal love.

Carmen was composed by Georges Bizet with a libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. Premiering at the Opéra‑Comique in 1875 amidst controversy for its raw themes and bold characterisation, Carmen quickly became a repertoire staple celebrated for its dramatic storytelling and musical brilliance. Carrie Cracknell’s staging, which debuted at the Met on New Year’s Eve 2023, relocates the drama to a modern context that shines a light on themes such as gendered violence, social inequality, and personal agency. With sharp visual storytelling and thematic urgency, the production reframes Carmen not as a sultry trope but as a complex, defiant woman at the centre of her own narrative. By foregrounding urgent social themes, Cracknell’s approach keeps Bizet’s opera vital and immediate, ensuring Carmen remains an opera that both challenges and inspires.

Some excellent singing in a horrendous production that the Met should be embarrassed to present. Our performance was interrupted by protesters, which was more interesting than anything happening on stage.
