What is the play Data about? 

Data plunges you into the hidden world of Silicon Valley’s cutting‑edge tech: when a brilliant young programmer's algorithm becomes the centrepiece of a secretive AI surveillance scheme, he must decide whether to protect his career, or blow the whistle. The play focuses on the character’s moral dilemma, the human cost of “progress,” and the terrifying power of systems that monitor our every move. Filled with tension, heartbreak and urgency, this is a story that feels dangerously close to today’s headlines. Allow yourself to be drawn into a high-stakes moral maze of loyalty, ambition, fear and conscience all collide. Data doesn’t just ask what we can build, it asks what we should. 

Data premiered as a digital production in 2021 with the Alliance Theatre; it was then staged in 2024 at Arena Stage, Washington DC, and is now receiving its New York stage premiere Off‑Broadway.

The Creative Team of Data

Data is written by Matthew Libby. Libby is an American playwright and screenwriter. His credits include SISTERS, Malicious Animal Magnetism, and House of India. Libby was a finalist for the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Award and a nominee for the Helen Hayes Award. He has also worked in television writing rooms, developing projects for Hulu and Lionsgate/eOne.

Tyne Rafaeli directs. Rafaeli is a Lucille Lortel Award-winning, Drama League and Drama Desk-nominated British-American theatre director. Her credits include Pulitzer Prize finalist Selling Kabul, Weather Girl, and Spain.
