Dead Man Walking Opera Tickets On Sale Now

Be one of the first to see Jake Heggie’s modern opera Dead Man Walking during its anticipated Metropolitan Opera House premiere this year, in a haunting production by Ivo van Hove. This masterful piece about one woman’s fight for the soul of a death row inmate is one of the most powerful and thought-provoking operas of the last 20 years.

About the Dead Man Walking Opera

Based on Sister Helen Prejean’s memoir of the same name, Dead Man Walking takes audiences to death row in Louisiana, where Sister Helen is a spiritual advisor for inmate and convicted murderer Joseph De Rocher. The tense drama and questions of faith, redemption and guilt are matched with beautiful and poignant music.

Dead Man Walking was first staged by San Francisco Opera in 2000 and has become one of the most-performed American operas in the world. Its unflinching story, threaded throughout with hope and unexpected friendship, is a powerful one that transcends borders.

Dead Man Walking Opera Cast and Creatives

Tony Award-winning director Ivo van Hove (A View from the Bridge; A Little Life; West Side Story) helms the Met Opera premiere of American composer Jake Heggie’s masterpiece. Van Hove brings his distinctive minimalist style to the opera and is a perfect match for the powerful emotional contours shaping the story.

Heggie’s expressive and moving music is complemented by Tony and Emmy Award winner Terrence McNally’s (Ragtime; Kiss of the Spider Woman) libretto, which is at turns devastating and sharply funny.

Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts a fantastic cast including mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato as Sister Helen, bass-baritone Ryan McKinny as Joseph De Rocher, soprano Latonia Moore as Sister Rose, and mezzo-soprano Susan Graham as De Rocher’s mother. Graham previously sang Helen Prejean in the opera’s 2000 premiere.

This moving and confronting opera challenges as much as it entertains, and has an “almost perfect fusion of ideas and emotions” (The Australian). Under Ivo van Hove’s direction, the story flourishes for a brand new audience and will make you reconsider your views as you marvel at the beauty of the music and performances. Dead Man Walking is at the Metropolitan Opera House for a limited season this Fall.
