Dead Outlaw Tickets Available Now!

The darkly hilarious Dead Outlaw transfers to Broadway’s Longacre Theatre following a critically acclaimed, award-winning run Off-Broadway. This unforgettable, riotous new musical is based on the unbelievable true story of corpse-turned-celebrity Elmer McCurdy and the hijinks that this “dead outlaw” got up to beyond the grave. You won’t want to miss this “kooky endeavor” (Vulture) as it transfers for a strictly limited run - book now, before you have to beg, steal or borrow a ticket.

What is the musical Dead Outlaw about?

This “95% true” story tells the tale of Elmer McCurdy, an inept American Outlaw who died in Oklahoma in 1911 following a shootout with the police. Dubbed “The Bandit Who Wouldn't Give Up", a local coroner preserved McCurdy’s corpse with arsenic while the authorities searched for his next of kin. But as no family showed up and rumours of McCurdy’s bumbling, booze-fuelled crimes began to be wildly exaggerated, the preserved body drew a crowd of onlookers, keen to catch a glimpse of the “dead outlaw” and sparking an inflated posthumous reputation that led the corpse on a wild adventure. McCurdy’s body travelled with side shows and carnivals, featured in B-movies and - believed by the owners to be a dummy - acted as a prop in a Southern Californian amusement park, where six decades after McCurdy’s death it was finally discovered that this mannequin was, in fact, a mummy.

An “agile ensemble” (Vulture) of eight performers bring this wild story to life with a raucous onstage band and rockabilly-inspired tunes, charting McCurdy’s journey, both before the grave and beyond - from his fractured family upbringing and his haphazard life of crime to the discovery of his remains in 1976. Full of riotous toe-tapping songs, tongue-in-cheek laughs and macabre moments, Dead Outlaw tells McCurdy’s story with dark humour, dignity and “deliciously weird grace” (Exeunt). Dead Outlaw’s Off-Broadway premiere snagged multiple award noms and wins, including winning Best Musical at the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and New York Critic’s Circle Awards.

Who are the cast and creatives of Dead Outlaw?

Casting for the Broadway transfer is to be announced, but Dead Outlaw’s Off-Broadway run starred Andrew Durand (Shucked) as Elmer McCurdy in a “stellar performance” (Exeunt), Jeb Brown (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical) as Bandleader and Walter Jarrett, Eddie Cooper (Parade) as Coroner Joseph L. Johnson and Dwain Esper, Dashiell Eaves (Sing Street) as Louis, Julia Knitel (Bye Bye Birdie) as Helen McCurdy, Maggie Johnson and Millicent Esper, Ken Marks (Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark) as Root Johnson and Douglas MacArthur, Trent Saunders (Evita) as Andy Payne and Thom Sesna (Sweeney Todd) as Thomas Noguchi.

From the Tony Award-winning team behind the critically acclaimed musical The Band’s Visit, which won the 2018 Tony Award for Best Musical, Dead Outlaw is directed by David Cromer (Angels in America, Our Town), with a book by playwright and screenwriter Itamar Moses (Boardwalk Empire, The Affair) and songs by David Yazbek (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown) and Erik Della Penna.
