Journey down the Amazon River with an opera diva as Florencia en el Amazonas brings a story of lost love to the Metropolitan Opera House. This stunning work from one of Mexico’s foremost composers is sung entirely in Spanish, and suffused with magical realism for a captivating evening of entertainment. It enjoyed a world premiere back in 1996 at Houston’s Wortham Theater Center, and now makes a long-anticipated debut with the internationally acclaimed Met Opera company.

What is Florencia en el Amazonas about?

Famed soprano Florencia Grimaldi is returning to Brazil to perform at the legendary opera house of Manaus, but as she travels to her homeland by boat, she is overcome with thoughts of finding her long-lost lover, who vanished into the jungle many years ago whilst hunting butterflies.

Magical realism is at the heart of this modern classic opera, which is inspired by Gabriel Garcia Marquez - the author of One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera. Featuring a colorful and enigmatic cast of supporting characters, Mexican composer Daniel Catán’s work is a spellbinding, romantic and adventurous opera that takes audiences deep into the Amazon.

The composer of Florencia en el Amazonas, Daniel Catán, is widely considered to be Mexico’s best opera composer. In this 1996 work, his magnetic, sumptuous music sweeps us along the Amazon River alongside the memorable passengers joining Florencia on her journey.

At the Met Opera, conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin is on the podium, leading an enthralling new production by Mary Zimmerman. Zimmerman is a Tony Award-winning director (Ovid’s Metamorphoses, 2002), and her vibrant imagination brings the magic, mysteries and thrill of this epic story to the Met stage with stunning results.

The Met Opera premiere of Florencia en el Amazonas stars soprano Ailyn Pérez as Florencia Grimaldi, with a supremely talented company portraying her fellow travelers: soprano Gabriella Reyes as journalist Rosalba, bass-baritone Greer Grimsley as the captain, baritone Mattia Olivieri as his first mate, tenor Mario Chang as the captain’s nephew Arcadio, and mezzo-soprano Nancy Fabiola Herrera and baritone Michael Chioldi as bickering couple Paula and Álvaro.
