About Floyd Collins

Floyd Collins is based on the true story of a cave explorer in Kentucky in 1925. Participating in what we now call the “Cave Wars” of the 20th century, Collins made notable discoveries, including the Great Crystal Cave, while chasing his—and many others’—dream of fame and fortune. Convinced that he had found the next big tourist attraction, Collins went exploring in Sand Cave, only to become trapped by a 27-pound rock on his way out.

As rescuers arrive, the first media frenzy in the United States ensues. Crowds gather at the mouth of the cave, and reporters fuel the growing hysteria, all while Floyd Collins fights for his life. This evocative exploration of what it means to chase the “American Dream” is not to be missed!

The Creative Team

Tina Landau made her Broadway debut in 2001 with The Bells Are Ringing starring Faith Prince, and returned in 2009 with the Steppenwolf production of Tracy Letts’ Superior Donuts. In February 2015, it was announced that she would be co-adapting and directing Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical. She was later nominated for the 2018 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical and won Best Director and Best Production of a Musical at both the Drama Desk Awards and Outer Critics Circle Awards.

After the Off-Broadway debut of Floyd Collins in 1996, Landau was nominated for the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Director of a Musical. The production later won the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical.

Adam Guettel is best known for his two-time Tony Award-winning musical The Light in the Piazza (Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations). His early work includes Floyd Collins, Love’s Fire, and Saturn Returns.
