Il Trovatore Tickets: Verdi’s Powerful Opera Returns

Hidden identities, forbidden lovers and a lust for revenge collide in one of the greatest operas ever written, Il Trovatore. Verdi’s resonant and richly rewarding story returns to the Met Opera as part of an exciting new season of work, in a staging inspired by Spanish painter Francisco Goya’s haunting and atmospheric Civil War pieces.

What is Il Trovatore about?

When a gypsy woman is accused of bewitching one of Count di Luna’s sons and burnt at the stake, her daughter Azucena vows to get revenge. She is hellbent on a death for a death, with devastating consequences.

Fifteen years later, the new Count di Luna - the brother of the bewitched boy - is besotted with beautiful Leonora, but she has eyes only for the mysterious troubadour Manrico. Their love triangle grows into a tangled web of deception, jealousy, murder and vengeance… but who is the Troubador?

Il Trovatore, known as The Troubador in English, is one of the most well-known and performed operas in the canon. Its stirring score, including “Anvil Chorus”, vividly brings to life a tale of familial discord and forbidden love.

He composed 26 operas during his career, including La Traviata, Rigoletto and Luisa Miller, and in the fifteen years before his death he penned the hugely successful and influential Shakespeare-inspired works Otello (1887) and Falstaff (1893).
