What is the opera La Sonnambula about?
Set in a peaceful Swiss village in the early 19th century, La Sonnambula (or, The Sleepwalker) tells the tale of the gentle Amina, betrothed to Elvino, who is discovered sleepwalking into the bridal chamber of Count Rodolfo - sparking tragedy, suspicion and ultimately, redemption. Bellini’s soaring melodies and shimmering style convey innocence, jealousy and forgiveness in equal measure.
Bellini’s La Sonnambula premiered at Milan’s Teatro Carcano in 1831 and quickly became a highlight of the bel canto or “beautiful singing” tradition, with its challenging vocal work and high tessitura making the part of Amina one of the most impressive and sought-after Soprano roles. Rolando Villazón’s staging - first seen in Paris in 2021 - combines period charm with psychological insight, preserving the opera’s Alpine setting while probing deeper emotional undercurrents.
Who are the cast of La Sonnambula?
