Metropolitan Opera House
Wagner’s magnificent mid-career opera, inspired by the medieval legend of the Swan Knight, returns to the Met Opera after 17 years.
Wagner’s epic medieval opera
After 17 years, Wagner’s incredible mid-career opera Lohengrin returns to the Met Opera House in a triumphant new production. The composer’s Romantic-era reimagining of the medieval Swan Knight legend is a soaring tale of romance, duty, and division. A mysterious knight arrives in a land marked by unrest and swears to help an oppressed maiden - on the condition that she never asks his name.
Wagner’s score is breathtaking in its versatility, as it draws audiences through the core themes of this timeless story: divinity, politics, migration, and attraction. Director François Girard - returning to the Met after his stunning production of Parsifal - presents the opera with striking style and atmospheric staging.
The Lohengrin cast is led by Piotr Beczała as the titular knight, who arrives in a boat drawn by a swan. He is joined by sopranos Tamara Wilson and Elena Stikhina, sharing the role of virtuous and falsely accused duchess Elsa; soprano Christine Goerke as sorceress Ortrud; bass-baritone Evgeny Nikitin as Ortrund’s power-hungry husband Telramund; and bass Günther Groissböck as King Heinrich.
