What is the Musical Mexodus About?
Mexodus ignites the stage with a daring and rhythmic reimagining of an overlooked journey. Rather than following the familiar northern route of the Underground Railroad, Mexodus follows the untold voyage of those enslaved who sought freedom by crossing south into Mexico. Through inventive live‑looping and genre‑blending music, the story unfolds via two performers as they embody both creators and characters, forging a deeply human connection between a freedom seeker and an unexpected ally.
A “thrilling, multicultural hip‑hop history lesson” (The Washington Post), Mexodus weaves innovative and broad musical influences into a theatrical soundscape that's immersive, dynamic, and deeply communal. You won’t want to miss it - book today.
The History of Mexodus
The musical was developed through New York Stage and Film in 2021, receiving stagings at Baltimore Center Stage and Mosaic Theater Company in Washington, D.C., before premiering at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California 2024, before making its New York City debut at the Minetta Lane Theatre in 2025.
