About Othello

Shakespeare’s famous tragedy is a masterful dive into the psychology of envy, ambition and bigotry, as noble general Othello passes over Iago for promotion. Iago is a master manipulator who, intent on getting payback, slyly convinces Othello that his wife Desdemona is cheating on him. As power plays turn into dangerous mind games, the consequences are uncontrollable and brutal.

Denzel Washington is back on Broadway as Othello in Shakespeare’s rich and shocking tragedy, following his previous collaboration with director Kenny Leon on a Tony Award-winning revival of Fences . With a vast and varied resume of acting credits to his name, Washington is a two-time Oscar winner (Glory; Training Day ) who is lauded for his gravitas and emotional dexterity on screen and stage.

Washington has previously appeared in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar on Broadway; his performance as conflicted traitor Brutus laid the foundations for his towering new role in Othello .

Denzel Washington is joined in this titan sparring match by Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal as Iago, and British rising star Molly Osborne as Desdemona.

Jake Gyllenhaal is one of the biggest film stars working in Hollywood, with credits including Nightcrawler, Donnie Darko and Brokeback Mountain . His last major role on Broadway was in the critically acclaimed Sea Wall/A Life , for which he earned a Tony nomination.

Molly Osborne makes her Broadway debut as Desdemona after working extensively in London’s West End and UK theater scene. Her credits include Fiddler on the Roof, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Indecent .
