A Powerfully Moving Drama: Tickets for Punch on Broadway
Gut-wrenching drama Punch transfers to Broadway’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre this fall. Tony Award nominee James Graham's “searing, intense” (The Telegraph) play about a teenager who accidentally kills another boy with a single blow first premiered in Nottingham, UK, to critical acclaim. Book your tickets today for the “most moving work yet” (The Times) from one of England’s most celebrated playwrights. What is the Broadway play Punch about?
In the English city of Nottingham, troubled teenager Jacob is on a whirlwind bender of drugs, booze, and brawls. When his night out takes a fateful turn, one punch alters the course of Jacob’s life forever. Convicted of manslaughter at at just nineteen years old, Jacob struggles to accept the fallout from his actions and rebuild his future - but salvation comes from an unlikely source when he connects with the parents of the boy he killed.Based on a jaw-dropping true story, Punch is adapted from Right from Wrong, Jacob Dunne’s memoir about remorse, redemption and the Restorative Justice system. Dunne consulted on the “heartbreaking and heartwarming” (The Times) stage adaptation, written by award-winning, Nottingham-born playwright James Graham. It premiered at Nottingham Playhouse in 2024 to standing ovations and critical acclaim, before transferring to the Young Vic Theatre, London in spring 2025.
Punch is dedicated to James Hodgkinson, the young man who lost his life, and seeks to raise awareness about the dangers of one punch and the benefits of Restorative Justice.
Who are the cast and creative team of Punch?
Punch is written by playwright and screenwriter James Graham, one of Britain’s leading playwrights. He is best known for his politically charged, blistering fictionalizations of real-life events. A two-time Olivier Award winner, Graham’s previous work includes This House and Dear England at the National Theatre, Best of Enemies at the Young Vic, and The Vote at the Donmar Warehouse. As a screenwriter, Graham has adapted his own work, including Quiz for ITV. His BBC drama Sherwood won two BAFTAs, while his show Brexit: An Uncivil War, which aired on Channel 4 and HBO, earned both BAFTA and Emmy nominations. Two of Graham’s previous plays have transferred to Broadway, Privacy and Ink - which earned six Tony nominations - and he has also written the book for Broadway musicals Tammy Faye and Finding Neverland. In 2020 Graham was appointed an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to drama and young people in British theatre.
Punch is directed by Adam Penford, who is Artistic Director of the Nottingham Playhouse. Penford directed both the Nottingham premiere and the London transfer of the play. His previous credits include A Small Family Business for the Royal National Theatre, Committee for the Donmar Warehouse, The Sound of Music for Chichester Festival Theatre and the UK tour of Dear Evan Hanson.
