What is the musical The Queen of Versailles about?

Computer engineer and beauty queen turned billionairess Jackie Siegal has it all. A mother of eight and wife to David “The Timeshare King” Siegal, Jackie considers herself to be the living embodiment of the American Dream, and she invites all of America in to witness her biggest venture yet. The Siegals will construct a Palace of Versailles-inspired mega mansion, a $100 million dollar project that will make history as the largest private home in America - and a documentary crew will capture the whole process. But as the recession of 2008 hits, both the Siegals' wealth and their dreams begin to slip through their fingers. Will the queen get her palace, or will the Siegals learn the true cost of the American Dream?

Kristen Chenoweth heads up the cast as sparkling socialite Jackie Siegal. A Tony and Emmy Award winner, Chenoweth inspired Schwartz to write the character of Glinda, and originated the role in Wicked , earning a Tony nomination. Her musical theatre credits include You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Promises Promises and Candide. On screen roles include an Emmy winning performance on Pushing Daisies and an Emmy-nominated role on Glee , as well as performances in Schmigadoon, The West Wing and - of course - a cameo in the 2024 Wicked film.

Confirmed to be joining Chenoweth for the Broadway transfer is The White Lotus: Sicilly star F Murray Abraham as David Siegal. Abraham is an Academy Award and Golden Globe winner and BAFTA, Emmy and Grammy nominee. Abraham’s other credits include Amadeus, Scarface, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Waiting for Godot.

Who are the creative team of The Queen of Versailles?

The Queen of Versailles has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. With a career spanning over five decades, Schwartz is perhaps best known for his songwriting and composition work on Wicked, Pippin, Rags and Godspell , as well as for writing the lyrics for several Disney musicals including Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Enchanted.

Schwartz’s accolades include three Grammy Awards, three Academy Awards, four Drama Desk Awards, the Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theater and a Golden Globe. He is a six-time Tony nominee, and in 2015 received the Tony Award's Isabelle Stevenson Award for his commitment to fostering new talent. In 2008 Schwartz received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 2009 was inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the American Theater Hall of Fame.

The musical has a book by award-winning playwright and screenwriter Lindsey Ferrentino (Ugly Lies the Bone, Amy and the Orphans) and is directed by Tony Award-winning director Michael Arden (Parade, Once on This Island, Maybe Happy Ending).
