School Girls; or, the African Mean Girls Play is set in Ghana’s prestigious Aburi Girls Boarding School, centring on a group of students during the 1980s. The comedy takes place as the girls prepare for the arrival of the Miss Ghana pageant, pulling out all the stops to impress, including the school’s “Queen Bee”, Paulina. However, the dynamic between the group of girls shifts when an undeniably talented transfer student arrives. Discover who will be chosen for the pageant... and at what cost?
The History of School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play
The play made its debut as part of the MCC PlayLab series at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in 2017, where it was directed by Rebecca Taichman. School Girls; or, the African Mean Girls Play then played two seasons in Philadelphia at the Arden Theatre Company. Jocelyn Bioh’s comedy then made its UK premiere at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre in London for a summer season in 2023, where it was highly praised by critics.
African Mean Girls Play on Broadway Creative Team
School Girls; or, the African Mean Girls Play is written by Jocelyn Bioh. She performed in regional and Off-Broadway productions for a number of years before becoming a successful playwright. Her writing credits include African Americans, Happiness and Joe, and Jaja’s African Hair Braiding, which made its Broadway debut in 2023 and recently received a UK premiere.
This production is directed by Tony Award nominee Whitney White. Her credits include The Secret Lies of Bees, The Spectacularly Lamentable Trial of Miz Martha Washington, and Soft. Her performer credits include a recent production of All Is But Fantasy at the Royal Shakespeare Company.
