About The Counter

Every morning at a small town’s local diner, a waitress refills one of her regulars’ coffee. As an unlikely friendship develops between customer and employee, he can’t help but keep coming back for more. But when he asks for a shocking favor, deeply hidden secrets on both sides come to light.

Funny, surprising and sensitive, The Counter is a moving portrait of the small everyday connections that can change our lives.

Creative Team

Playwright Meghan Kennedy has a longstanding relationship with Roundabout Theatre, and presents The Counter as her latest commission for the company. Her previous work includes the successful Too Much, Too Much, Too Many and Napoli, Brooklyn. She has also written for television, including Sara Bareilles’ rom-com Little Voice.

Tony Award winner David Cromer directs. His credits include The Band’s Visit, The House of Blue Leaves, The Sound Inside and Camp Siegfried, and he won the Lucille Lortel and Obie Awards for his acclaimed 2009 Off-Broadway revival of Our Town.

Roundabout Theatre’s 2024-2025 Season

The Counter is just one of a fantastic range of shows playing in New York as part of Roundabout Theatre’s new season, which includes new dramas, comedies and opera revivals. Across the company’s Broadway and Off-Broadway stages, audiences can enjoy the latest premieres from award-nominated writers including Bess Wohl’s Liberation and David Henry Hwang’s Yellow Face. Tickets are also available for stars including Ramin Karimloo, performing in The Pirates of Penzance.
